This post is all about how to decorate a Boho Wild One First Birthday Party with easy DIY decorations to celebrate your little wild one’s first year!
Your baby’s first birthday party is sort of a big deal. I mean it’s their first one ever.
Furthermore, that first year with your baby is somewhat bittersweet. On one hand, it’s a joy to watch them change, grow, and develop during that first year. On the other hand, the past year was the biggest, life-changing challenge you’ve ever faced.
So it’s completely understandable if you want to go wild with the party planning.
It’s a celebration, not only for your little one, but for YOU, too.
And I know you both deserve it.
We decided to have XO’s Boho Wild One First Birthday party at a public park in South Florida. It was a cool and breezy day which is rare by South Florida standards. We catered BBQ, had an awesome DJ, face painting, balloon twisting, a huge bounce house with double slides, and a gelato food truck!
We had a lovely theme, good food, great company, and fun activities for the kids. It really was a wonderful way to celebrate our darling daughter, XO.
I’ve included as much information about the things I used to style this Boho Wild One birthday party and detailed the things I made myself. I hope you’ll find some elements of my decor that you could use for your wild one’s first birthday party.
Boho Wild One First Birthday Party Decorations:
Boxwood greenery backdrop and stand
I splurged on the backdrop setup. But I was absolutely determined to use a boxwood greenery backdrop because I just love the ones I’ve seen in inspiration pictures.
I’m glad I went through with it because it turned out so lovely. I’ve also been able to use the stand and backdrop for other events.
I ordered this heavy-duty adjustable pipe and drape stand for the backdrop. I needed something stronger than the usual backdrop stands you’ll find out there, since I had to hang heavy faux boxwood panels on it.
Furthermore, our venue was outdoors and the wind can be stronger than you think, so a heavy-duty stand was necessary.
Here’s how I created the faux greenery backdrop.
Then, I used more zip ties to hang it to the pipe and drape poles on all three sides.
Since all 3 bars on this pipe and drape stand are adjustable, you can adjust the height and width to the dimensions of your boxwood panel.
Wooden name signs
These wooden name signs from MattieVs on Etsy were the perfect touch for XO’s Wild One birthday party backdrop. The natural wood popped on the dark greenery backdrop and it really commemorated XO’s big day.
The great thing about these name signs is that after the party, you can spray paint them (or leave as is) and hang it up in your baby’s nursery. I just love party decor pieces that have multiple purposes and uses.
My girlfriends came to the venue early to help me with the balloon garland. We used a combination of lavender, pink pearl, and pearl white 12-inch balloons. We also added ivory balloons to add in some color dimension.
To add even more dimension, you could also do a mix of matte, pearl, and metallic balloons in the same colors.
If you plan on doing a balloon garland at your event, you must invest in an electric balloon pump. This was the only way we were able to make this balloon garland in under an hour.
We also inserted fresh silver dollar eucalyptus branches randomly into the balloon garland for an ultra boho effect.
Boho Wild One Birthday Cake
This gorgeous cake was created by the talented Brantley Jaramillo of Sweet Brantley’s Cakes. The delicate lace on the teepee, the intricate dream catcher, and the marbled effect on the bottom tier were all so special and looked stunning.
The 3-tier cake was going to be substantial so I knew I needed to find a sturdy and wide cake stand. I also wanted to find a cake stand that is versatile enough to use for other events. Luckily, I found the perfect wooden cake stand that I’ve actually been able to use over and over again at 4 different events. Now that’s money well spent!
Boho Wild One Cookies
I made the sugar cookies myself. Keep in mind that this was my very first time making decorated sugar cookies, but they came out just fine. My guests loved them!
This boho cookie cutter set worked out perfectly for our Wild One birthday theme.
I also used this number 1 cookie cutter to make a few cookies because I really wanted to get a picture of XO chomping down into one.
A really nice way to display cookies is on top of jelly beans inside a platter or tray. The jelly beans help to keep the cookies nestled in a nice presentable position, and they’re edible too. So guests can take some home with them in their treat bags. The cookie platters I used are actually bathroom vanity trays, but no one has to know that!
Boho Rice Krispies Treats
I needed to fill my dessert table with more treats. With so little time as a full-time working mom, I needed something easy to make that I could quickly jazz up with our Wild One theme colors. Answer: Rice Krispies treats!
Here’s how to decorate Rice Krispies treats for a boho wild one first birthday party.
First, make your favorite rice krispies treats recipe and cut them into large rectangles.
Then, fill squeeze bottles with the melted candy and drizzle it over the rice krispies rectangles. Just drizzle in a zig-zag motion over the treats. Don’t worry about being neat – it’s supposed to look organic.
These boho rice krispies treats tied in perfectly with our Boho Wild One theme.
I purchased fresh flowers from Sam’s Club (yes! Sam’s sells flowers in bulk!) and Fifty Flowers. I ordered hot pink roses, light pink roses, purple stock, green mini hydrangeas, premium white hydrangeas, and silver dollar eucalyptus.
Dessert Table Decorations
I shopped around for different decorative pieces to add to the dessert table. I placed gold antlers in front of the floral centerpiece and that truly accentuated the flowers. The antlers are so pretty and after your party, you could hang them on your wall as home decor or to hang up jewelry.
The cookie platters are actually bathroom vanity trays. I filled the trays with jelly beans and then placed the cookies on top. Don’t forget to provide a scoop, tongs, and clear treat bags for your guests to take your creations home.
The two pink milk glass cake stands are from the Martha Stewart collection and I don’t see them available anymore. But these melamine cake stands are cheaper and more durable alternatives.
Boho Wild One Birthday Invitations
I found this pretty boho wild one first birthday invitation design on Etsy from CardaMoonPaperie. After getting the invitation created with your child’s name and party information, you could send the image out via text message or save the image to a Facebook event, to save some money. If you would like a more personal way to invite your guests, upload the digital file to Vistaprint, order prints, and mail them out.
Boho Wild One First Birthday Milestones Stats Poster
A stats poster is a really cute way to document your baby’s milestones on his or her first birthday. It’s actually very important for keeping memories. Looking back on XO’s milestones stats poster, I’m so glad I took the time to order one of these. I couldn’t have remembered the important milestones she reached by age 1 if I hadn’t ordered this poster.
Plus, when you get a milestones stats poster to match your theme, it adds another touch of gorgeous to your event. It also gives your guests something to learn about our little one. I bought this boho wild one first birthday milestones stats poster that matched our invitations from CardaMoonPaperie. Then, I had the file printed on a 16 x 20 canvas at Walmart. Finally, at the party, I placed the canvas on a simple wooden easel.
Baby’s First Year Collage
So easy to create with amazing results, this first year collage is the perfect touch. You have to showcase your baby’s pictures from month to month so every one can see how much he/she has grown through that first year. It’s just amazing to see that year in nutshell.
To make this one, I attached month labels to mini clothespins. Next, I hung up monthly pictures of my daughter to a collage clip frame strung with twine. The particular one I used is not available anymore, but I really like this alternative.
Finally, I embellished the entire project by hanging mini tassels on the twine. Easy-peasy!
The hardest part was choosing which monthly pictures to print out. And don’t be surprised if that trip down memory lane makes you shed a few tears and marvel at how much your little baby has grown. At one year old, they’re no longer infants. But they will always be our babies.
Highchair and Boho Highchair Banner
You can’t forget a highchair for your little birthday babe! It’s the perfect way to get him or her to sit for pictures and cake!
We brought our highchair from home. It just so happened to have the perfect look for our Wild One birthday theme. If bringing your current highchair isn’t a good option for you, IKEA sells a very affordable highchair. It’s plain white with silver legs, but at under $20, it’s a steal!
Then, you can embellish it with a really cute highchair banner to match your theme. I found XO’s boho wild one highchair banner on Etsy from PrettyLittleClippie.
Party Favor Boxes
At the party, we gave out party favors to all the kids in these beautifully constructed gable boxes. My brother and sister-in-law put the boxes together and filled them with goodies such as mini Play-Doh cups, bubble wands, full-size bags of Skittles, emoji bracelets, and boxes of crayons.
There was extra room in the gable boxes for the kids to take home treats from the dessert table, too. We personalized the boxes with a boho design and text on adhesive paper.
Our Boho Wild One birthday party wouldn’t be complete without a teepee. I embellished the teepee with a dream catcher and some tassels that I made myself with yarn. I wanted to take pictures of XO inside the teepee so I needed to use some kind of floor covering. A round bohemian beach towel did just the trick and I added several boho print pillows that really tied the look together.
Giant Dream Catchers for Boho Wild One First Birthday Party Decor
The venue had these great, high cross-beams and I wanted to hang something up there to accentuate the height of the pavilion. My husband got up there and attached these extra-large dream catchers from 3 different beams. This really added that wow factor to the party venue.
The exact 24-inch diameter dream catchers that I bought for XO’s party are no longer available, but you could DIY this with a hula hoop, fabric strips, and string or even by tying a crochet tablecloth doily to the center of a hula hoop. If you need a detailed tutorial on how to make a giant dream catcher, try this tutorial by Kim Crystal.
I made a long tassel garland that we zig-zagged across the ceiling of the pavilion. The tassel garland is very easy to make. But if you need a very long garland to string across a ceiling, you will need to plan ahead. Although tassels are very easy to create, making a very long tassel garland will take some time. Here is a video tutorial on how to make yarn tassels. I used a long piece of cardboard (instead of my hand) to make long tassels. But the concept is the same. Then I stringed the long tassels on a long piece of to create the long garland to string across the ceiling.
The tassels and giant dream catchers took our boho wild one birthday party decor to another level. I got so many compliments on both elements through out the day, so it was definitely worth the time to do it.
Boho Wild One First Birthday Party Photo Area
Photo areas give your guests a fun backdrop to take their own pictures. It’s also another place for people to gather around and mingle. I used lace strips tied to a rope to make the backdrop. It’s an effective and affordable way to get something up as a background with minimal effort. My brilliant friend figured out how to tie the lace ends down and anchored them to the tree since it was a breezy day.
We tied up a gold “one” balloon and laid down small rugs from IKEA for a bohemian feel. The exact rugs I used are no longer available. However, IKEA usually offers some great and insanely cheap rugs that may coordinate with your event, so definitely check there.
I also placed a few flower crowns on a table for the girls to wear in their pictures and take home afterward.
In the end, my guests had a blast at our daughter’s Boho Wild One birthday party. We had a lovely theme, good food, great company, and fun activities for the kids. We were also blessed with cool, breezy weather that day – and for South Florida, that is rare. I was extremely pleased with the entire day.
